Woman saved her daughter-in-law's life by donating her kidney

Source : ABP News

In this country we often see the cases of dowry, mental and physical torture, and other similar cases by the in-laws. But here we have a heart touching instance, a woman saved the life of her daughter-in-law by donating one of her kidneys even as the patient's mother backed out at the last moment.
A 36-year-old housewife from Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, Kavita had to undergo kidney transplant and her mother initially agreed to donate one of her kidneys to her daughter.
However, she backed out at the last minute when Kavita's mother-in-law, Vimla (65), came forward to donate one of her kidneys.
Dr Sunil Prakash, senior consultant and Director of Nephrology at BLK Super Speciality Hospital, said, "It is not a reel life story, but a real one with a happy ending. Kavita underwent successful kidney transplantation at the hospital. She is alright. It's amazing to see the relation between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law."
Kavita and family
Kavita had been suffering from frequent bouts of vomiting and sudden weight loss when she first visited a doctor and was managed on medication. Then she went through an ultrasound test for the whole abdomen and the results declared that she was suffering from renal failure.
A team of doctors decided that she would have to go for renal transplant. However, her family was faced with the biggest challenge to find a first degree donor, which can only be amongst close family members like mother, father, husband, son or daughter, brother or sister.
"Finally her mother agreed for kidney donation. All investigations were completed but just before the transplant, her mother refused to give her kidney. At this point, her mother-in-law came forward which nobody expected. She really surprised us all," said Dr. Prakash.
"After examining Vimla, we found her fit to donate her kidney to Kavita. The surgery took place on June 23. Now both donor and the recipient are doing fine," said Dr Aditya Pradhan, senior consultant, Urology, Andrology and Renal Transplant at the hospital.
